What you'll study

This degree combines core biomedical science theory with practical laboratory skills and professional practice. You will study human anatomy and physiology, clinical biochemistry, haematology and transfusion science, medical microbiology, immunology and serology, molecular diagnostics, and histology/histopathology basics. Complementary units cover laboratory instrumentation and data analysis, quality management and laboratory safety, professional ethics and communication, and research methods for laboratory science.

The course emphasises practical competency: you will spend substantial time in campus laboratories learning microscope techniques, spectrophotometry, chromatography, electrophoresis, PCR and other molecular methods, culture and identification of microorganisms, and blood product handling. Clinical placements in accredited diagnostic and hospital pathology laboratories are an integral component, allowing application of workplace workflows, sample handling, reporting standards and interprofessional practice.
