What you'll study

This honours degree combines foundational biomedical science with progressive clinical training. Early years emphasise anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, microbiology and animal nutrition, together with animal handling and clinical skills laboratories. Mid‑programme study extends into pathology, pharmacology, imaging, anaesthesia, diagnostic techniques and disease management across species.

In later years you undertake intensive clinical rotations in small animal, production animal, equine and mixed practice, plus community and conservation placements. The honours component includes a supervised research or capstone project that develops evidence‑based decision making and scientific communication. Teaching methods include lectures, practical laboratories, simulated clinics, workplace placements and objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs).

Entry requirements

Entry is competitive and applicants are normally required to demonstrate strong secondary school results with prerequisites in science (typically biology and chemistry or equivalent). Applicants may be considered on the basis of prior tertiary study or recognised equivalent qualifications. Practical animal experience and demonstrated motivation for a veterinary career are highly regarded in selection.

Domestic applicants will apply through the established tertiary admissions process and should refer to their state or territory admissions centre for the exact academic thresholds and prerequisite subjects. International applicants must meet recognised English language proficiency standards and provide certified academic records. Successful candidates will also need to meet professional and clinical placement requirements such as vaccinations, police checks and compliance with health and biosecurity screening before beginning clinical components.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for registration and practice as veterinarians and go on to careers across a broad range of sectors. Common career pathways include small animal practice (companion animal), equine practice, mixed and rural practice supporting livestock producers, and roles in wildlife and zoo medicine. Other opportunities are available in public and animal health, biosecurity and government inspection agencies, pharmaceutical and veterinary supply industries, laboratory diagnostics, research and academia, and animal welfare and conservation organisations.

Many graduates undertake further residency training or specialisation in areas such as surgery, internal medicine, diagnostic imaging or exotic animal practice, or move into management, advisory and policy roles within the agricultural and environmental sectors.
