What you'll study

The programme combines core political theory with modules that examine government, comparative politics, international relations and public policy. In the early stages you will build a foundation in political ideas, political analysis and research methods; later stages allow you to choose optional topics and a substantive piece of independent research.

• Core topics: political theory and ideologies, British and comparative government, international relations, public policy analysis, and qualitative and quantitative research methods.
• Optional topics: elections and voting behaviour, political communication and media, global governance, human rights, political economy, security and conflict, and environmental politics (availability of options may change).
• Final year project: an extended dissertation or applied project on a political question of your choice, supervised by academic staff.
• Teaching and assessment: a mix of lectures, seminars, workshops and independent study. Assessment methods typically include essays, policy briefings, presentations, exams and the final-year research project.

Entry requirements

Typical applicants are expected to hold a secondary school qualification such as A-levels, the International Baccalaureate, or an equivalent qualification (for example a BTEC). Admission considers a combination of academic achievement and the personal statement; admissions tutors also look for evidence of interest in political issues, critical thinking and communication skills.

Mature and international applicants are welcome; if English is not your first language you will need to meet the university's standard English language requirement or provide an accepted equivalent qualification. Additional requirements such as interviews or contextual offers may apply in some cases.
