What you'll study

This honours degree combines core biomedical science topics with practical laboratory training and independent research. Early modules establish foundations in cell biology, biochemistry, human physiology and molecular genetics, while intermediate and final-year modules extend into specialised areas such as immunology, microbiology, pharmacology, clinical biochemistry and haematology.

• Laboratory skills and techniques: aseptic technique, microscopy, spectrophotometry, PCR and electrophoresis, ELISA, blood film analysis, culture methods and basic data analysis.
• Core biomedical subjects: molecular biology, cellular signalling, human physiology and anatomy, metabolic pathways and pathophysiology.
• Disease-focused modules: immunology and infection, cancer biology, metabolic disease and neurobiology.
• Research project: an independent laboratory- or literature-based final-year project that develops experimental design, data handling and scientific communication skills.
• Professional and transferable skills: statistics for biosciences, scientific writing, ethics and regulation, laboratory safety and employability modules preparing you for placements or postgraduate study.
• Optional placement or study abroad: there are routes that allow a year in industry or research, or an international exchange to gain workplace experience and broaden perspectives.

Entry requirements

Entry typically requires successful completion of secondary qualifications with a strong science component. Applicants are normally expected to have A-levels (or equivalent) with at least one science subject such as biology, chemistry or another relevant laboratory science. Alternative accepted qualifications include BTEC National Diplomas, the International Baccalaureate, Scottish Highers/Advanced Highers and Access to Higher Education Diplomas with appropriate science content.

The university also considers relevant work experience, personal statements and references as part of a rounded application. GCSEs in English and mathematics (or equivalent) are usually expected at a standard pass level. For international students, evidence of English language proficiency is required.
