What you'll study

This honours-level mechanical engineering degree builds a foundation in mathematics, physics and engineering principles before progressing to specialised topics. Early years focus on calculus, linear algebra, statics and dynamics, materials science, and basic electrical and programming skills. Later years introduce thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, strength of materials, machine design, manufacturing processes, computer-aided design (CAD) and control systems.

• Core engineering science: calculus, mechanics, materials, and experimental methods with laboratory-based modules.
• Thermal and fluid systems: thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer and energy conversion.
• Design and manufacturing: machine element design, CAD/CAM, production engineering, metallurgy and quality control.
• Systems and control: mechatronics, sensors and actuators, control theory and embedded systems.
• Professional and project work: engineering management, ethics, group design projects and an individual final-year engineering project emphasising design, analysis and testing.
• Practical experience: laboratory classes, workshops and opportunities for industrial placements or internships with Maltese and international employers.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to have a secondary school leaving qualification with good passes in Mathematics and Physics or a closely related subject. Typical offers are based on the Maltese Matriculation Certificate or recognised equivalents such as A-levels, the International Baccalaureate or European secondary qualifications; successful applicants will normally demonstrate strength in mathematics.

Alternative entry routes exist for mature students or holders of recognised vocational qualifications. International applicants whose first language is not English may need to provide evidence of proficiency in English through an accepted test or qualification. Selected candidates may be required to attend an interview or provide a personal statement demonstrating motivation for engineering study.
