An accelerated Master of Science in Ecology that combines undergraduate and graduate study to fast-track students into applied ecological research and conservation practice. Suited to students aiming for hands‑on field and lab work with interests in wildlife, aquatic systems, and environmental leadership.
Coursework spans core ecological topics and applied areas. Students encounter evolution, wildlife ecology, conservation biology and aquatic ecosystems, supported by hands-on experiences in fieldwork and laboratory research. Regional research opportunities include aquatic ecology, fisheries biology, forest and fire ecology, and invasive species ecology.
Students follow an accelerated degree plan: after completing undergraduate prescribed coursework, General Education and electives they become eligible for Bachelor’s degree conferral. Typically in the fall of junior year students must apply to continue into the graduate portion of the accelerated program.
Graduates are prepared for leadership roles in environmental policy, conservation, and sustainable resource management. Career pathways highlighted include positions such as conservation scientist, environmental scientist, restoration planner and roles related to climate change policy and aquatic or fisheries management.
Funding sources noted include department-specific scholarships from the Western Colorado Foundation and broader merit- and need-based scholarships administered by Western Colorado University. The program also connects students with research funding and mentorship opportunities such as the NES Thornton Research Program.
