What you'll study

Alongside core musicianship training, the programme covers technical and creative topics including acoustics and psychoacoustics; sound design and editing; recording, mixing (digital and analog) and mastering; studio production for popular genres; electroacoustic techniques; acoustic and electronic composition; audio and video field recording for live events; advanced MIDI sequencing and orchestration; DAW applications; interactive computer music and real-time performance with Max/MSP; virtual and physical instrument design; algorithmic composition; audio synthesis; DSP programming; MIDI manipulation; multi-channel sound diffusion; digital controllers for studio and performance; and the history and aesthetics of electronic music.

Many of these subjects are offered through the Recording and Electronic Music I and II sequence and through rotating courses such as Music Technology Seminar and Recording Studio Practicum. The concentration also allows students to fulfil performance requirements via elective performance courses appropriate for both traditionally trained and technology-oriented musicians.

Entry requirements

Students must be accepted to the University of Tampa as Bachelor of Arts in Music degree students and submit a Music Audition Intent form in the SpartanStart portal to declare the music technology concentration. The concentration itself does not mandate an audition or portfolio for acceptance; however, students who wish to compete for music scholarships should complete the audition.

Career prospects

Upper-level students commonly secure pre-professional work in the Tampa Bay area and beyond, including roles as audio technicians, live-event audio providers, music scorers and producers for media, live-event recordists, studio assistants, and teachers at community music schools. Work can span recording and production, live entertainment support, media audio production and related music-technology positions.

Scholarships & funding angle (general)

While the music technology concentration does not require an audition for admission, an audition remains necessary if a student wants to be considered for music scholarships. Prospective students should consult the Department of Music about scholarship application procedures and deadlines.
