What you'll study

The degree comprises 15 core units plus one elective across two years. Core topics include foundations of education development; perspectives on teaching, learning and development; children’s play, creativity and the arts; children’s language and literacy; STEM in early childhood; assessment of child learning and development; diversity and inclusion; supporting children with additional needs; leadership and management in early childhood settings; research for early childhood professionals; and health, nutrition, ethics, safety and protection. The program also integrates two professional placements and offers elective choices such as Education Governance and Management or Contemporary Issues in Early Childhood Education, subject to demand.

Entry requirements

Applicants must meet academic, health and professional suitability conditions. Academically you need an Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) or relevant graduate qualifications; alternative pathways accept a graduate certificate/diploma or advanced diploma/associate degree with specified years of demonstrable industry experience (two or five years respectively). You must satisfy the course Inherent Requirements and hold a valid Working with Children Check prior to placements. Some early childhood settings require evidence of suitable vaccinations. English-language eligibility includes prior English-medium study or an IELTS overall 7.0 with no band below 6.5.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for roles including early childhood teacher, kindergarten teacher, childcare centre educational leader and early years curriculum coordinator. The course also supports progression to positions such as centre director, early years consultant or policy advisor in early childhood education.
