Expanded Function Dental Assisting
A focused, 200-hour diploma program that trains experienced chairside assistants to perform expanded functions such as placing restorations, sealants, coronal polishing and fluoride application. Suited to dental assistants with at least two years chairside experience who want state-approved qualification to sit the Pennsylvania EFDA exam.
What you'll study
Coursework focuses on clinical and technical procedures an Expanded Function Dental Assistant performs. Core practical tasks covered include placing restorations, applying sealants, performing coronal polishing, and administering fluoride treatments. Instruction combines online lectures with supervised biweekly lab sessions to practice hands-on skills.
Entry requirements
- Verification letter from employer confirming a minimum of 2 years of experience working as a chairside assistant.
- Proof of current RHS certification.
- Current CPR certification.
Career prospects
Graduates receive a diploma and may pursue roles in general dentistry, orthodontics, and similar dental practice settings. Completion enables applicants to sit for the Pennsylvania EFDA certification exam; YTI’s Career Services networks with employers but does not guarantee employment.
