What you'll study

Students focus deeply in a primary area of specialization (OT, NT, theology, church history or missions) and develop complementary expertise through a cognate discipline. The degree stresses research skills, academic writing and teaching preparation; students are encouraged to present at professional meetings each fall and pursue publishing under faculty mentorship. Language preparation includes Hebrew and Greek, with additional languages as required by the department.

Entry requirements

Admission requires a master’s degree (or non-U.S. equivalent) in religion or divinity for the PhD; the ThD requires a master’s degree in divinity (or equivalent). Applicants must have a minimum graduate GPA of 3.50 (on a 4.0 scale). Required materials include GRE General Test scores from an exam taken within five years; three professional recommendations; a résumé listing employment, education and any publications; a 30–40 page research paper demonstrating doctoral-level writing ability; and a Statement of Purpose addressing philosophical perspective and academic and professional goals. Hebrew and Greek are required; other language requirements depend on the department. Applicants whose education was not in English must submit TOEFL, IELTS or PTE (academic) scores. Seminary Background Screening is also required. Application deadlines: December 15 of the preceding year for Fall and Summer entry; June 15 of the preceding year for Spring entry.

Graduates are prepared primarily for academic posts as teacher-scholars in higher education and seminary settings, and for roles that demand advanced research, publication and teaching competence. The programme’s emphasis on publication and attendance at professional meetings supports placement into faculty positions and scholarly work within religious institutions.
