Programme overview

The PhD in Religious Education is an interdisciplinary doctoral program centered on competencies in religious education. It combines advanced coursework and a dissertation sequence, with students selecting an area of specialization—commonly Christian formation and discipleship or theological curriculum and instruction—or a customized option. The degree is accredited by the Commission on Accrediting of the Association of Theological Schools (ATS) and by the Adventist Accrediting Association.

What you'll study

Students complete a total of 64 credits: at least 48 credits of coursework delivered through lectures, seminars, independent study, and reading courses, plus a 16-credit dissertation sequence. Coursework and research are generally oriented toward social science research methodologies and the program framework’s defined competencies in religious education.

Entry requirements

• Master’s degree: MA (Religious Education), MDiv, MA (Religion), or an MA in a field related to religion or education.
• Academic preparation: 28 credits in religion and 16 undergraduate or graduate credits in education or discipleship in lifespan education.
• GRE General Test scores from an exam taken within five years.
• Writing sample (term paper, thesis, or research report) demonstrating ability to conduct and present research — required for PhD applicants.
• Applicants whose education was not in English must submit an English proficiency test score (Duolingo, TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE Academic).
• Application deadlines: Fall — July 15; Spring — November 15; Summer Session 1 — April 1; Summer Session 2 — May 1; Summer Session 3 — June 1.

Career prospects

The program prepares graduates for roles as ministry specialists, teacher-scholars, and educational leaders primarily within Seventh-day Adventist higher education and church structures, and for leadership or research roles in the broader community.
