What you'll study

Students learn methods for analyzing material culture and ancient texts to reconstruct past societies in the Near East and Mediterranean. The curriculum is research-oriented and designed to develop skills in archaeological fieldwork, artifact analysis and interpretation, and integration of textual and material evidence in historical reconstruction. Specific coursework and research activities align with doctoral-level training in archaeology and related disciplines.

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold a master’s degree (or non‑U.S. equivalent) in a field appropriate to the major from an accredited institution, with a minimum graduate GPA of 3.5 (applicants with lower GPA may be considered based on the overall profile). Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in specified ancient and two modern foreign languages that support their research goals (typically chosen from Latin, Hebrew, Greek, French, German, Italian and Arabic). Additional application components include three professional recommendations, a resume outlining employment or research experience, GRE General Test scores from within five years, a statement of purpose describing philosophical perspective and academic goals, and a writing sample (term paper, thesis or research report). Applicants whose education was not in English must submit TOEFL, IELTS or PTE (academic) scores. Seminary background screening is also required.

Graduates are prepared for teaching positions and archaeological research roles in institutions of higher education worldwide and for other careers that require advanced skills in archaeological interpretation and historical research of the ancient Near East and Mediterranean.
