Programme overview

The PhD in religion trains teacher-scholars concentrating in one primary field (Old Testament, New Testament, theology, church history or missions) with a cognate in a second area. The ThD is structured as an interdisciplinary doctorate across two concentrations, also with a cognate. Both degrees emphasize content mastery, critical thinking, scholarly research, publication, and teaching competence. The doctoral program requires 64 credits and is typically completed by full-time students in about five years. The programs are accredited by the Association of Theological Schools (ATS) and the Adventist Accrediting Association (AAA).

What you'll study

• In-depth study in a primary concentration: Old Testament, New Testament, theology, church history, or missions.
• A cognate area in a second field to complement the primary concentration.
• Advanced language preparation: Hebrew and Greek are required; additional languages as determined by the department.
• Training in scholarly research methods, critical analysis, publication practices, and pedagogical skills.
• Opportunities to attend professional meetings each fall and to work on mentored publishing projects using the seminary’s extensive theological library resources.

Entry requirements

• PhD: a master’s degree in religion or divinity (or non-U.S. equivalent). ThD: a master’s degree in divinity (or non-U.S. equivalent).
• Minimum graduate GPA of 3.50 on a 4.0 scale.
• Demonstrated language competence: Hebrew and Greek required; other languages as per departmental requirement.
• Three professional recommendations (e.g., advisors, major professors, employers).
• Résumé detailing employment, education, and any publishing record.
• GRE General Test taken within the prior five years.
• Statement of purpose addressing philosophical perspective and academic/professional goals.
• A substantial research paper (30–40 pages) showing doctoral-level writing ability.
• English proficiency test scores (TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE Academic) for applicants whose education was not in English.
• Seminary background screening.

Graduates are prepared primarily for academic careers as faculty and researchers in theological education, with skills applicable to scholarly publishing and leadership in church-related educational institutions.
