Programme overview

The Curriculum and Instruction suite includes MA, Education Specialist (EdS) and PhD pathways; the PhD is a research-oriented degree intended for those who wish to work in higher education or in curriculum and instruction research. The school offers online and evening course formats to accommodate working professionals and maintains partnerships with other universities, districts, and unions. The program is accredited by NCATE.

What you'll study

The PhD pathway emphasizes research in curriculum and instruction. The broader program offerings include an MA for deepening classroom practice and preparation for further research, and an EdS for advanced positions in K–12 and other learning organizations. A separate College and University Teaching Certificate (12 credits) provides professional development in university-level teaching for those without prior training.

Entry requirements

• PhD: a master's degree (or non-U.S. equivalent) from an accredited institution and a minimum graduate GPA of 3.30.
• EdS: a master’s degree and minimum graduate GPA of 3.20.
• MA: a bachelor’s degree (or non-U.S. equivalent) and minimum undergraduate GPA of 2.60.
• Transcripts from all institutions where undergraduate or graduate coursework was taken.
• Recommendations: two for the MA; three for the EdS and PhD (from advisors, major professors, or employers).
• Resume outlining employment, research, or special projects; and a Statement of Purpose describing philosophical perspective and professional/academic goals.
• International applicants whose language of education is not English must submit TOEFL, IELTS or PTE (Academic) scores.
• GRE General Test: required for doctoral programs; scores must be from an exam taken within five years.
• Application deadlines: Fall — July 15; Spring — November 15; Summer session deadlines vary by session (April 1, May 1, June 1).

Career prospects

Graduates of the PhD track typically pursue academic careers in higher education or roles in curriculum and instruction research. EdS graduates are prepared for advanced K–12 leadership and specialist positions; MA holders deepen their instructional expertise and may continue to further study or seek college-level teaching with additional training.
