A practitioner-focused online MEd that frames educators as agents of systemic change through experiential, liberatory, and justice-oriented pedagogy. Best suited to experienced teachers, university faculty, and educational leaders who want to reframe problems, deepen inquiry, and pursue systemic change in teaching, leadership, or justice-related work.

What you'll study

Coursework combines transdisciplinary theory and applied inquiry into teaching, learning, leadership, freedom, and responsibility. Examples of courses listed in the program include:

  • ESE-5442: Transformative Teaching and Leadership — examines core educational questions while embedding inquiry in concrete teaching-learning situations and school organizational contexts, positioning teachers and administrators as agents of systemic change.
  • ED-5800: Teaching and Learning — engages learners in varied subject matters (poetry, math, natural observation, physical phenomena) with attention to personal and collegial learning processes.
  • ED-5810: Seminar on Freedom and Responsibility — explores concepts of freedom and responsibility in education, minds, cultures, and environments, especially relevant amid pressures toward conformity and constraints on educational freedoms.

Entry requirements

Application components include a completed online application with essay questions, a resume/CV, a non-refundable $50 application fee, and official transcripts from all postsecondary institutions attended (to be emailed or mailed to the Office of Admissions). Two letters of recommendation from professional or academic evaluators are required (not a relative). Selected applicants will be interviewed by a faculty member in person, by phone, or via Skype. GRE or other standardized tests are not required. There are additional requirements for international applicants and for applicants without a bachelor's degree. The program posts term application deadlines (Summer: April 15; Fall: August 1; Spring: December 1).

Career prospects

The concentration is intended for practicing teachers, university faculty, educational leaders, and administrators and is relevant to roles in teaching, school leadership, social and environmental justice education, and related fields. Graduates report shifts in classroom practice, renewed professional purpose, and capacities for reflective practice, collaborative change-making, and leading learning-centered approaches in varied educational contexts.
