What you'll study

Students complete 4–6 courses designated as Leadership for Social Justice (LSJ) electives to earn the concentration. The concentration requires 12–20 credits; the full MAEd degree requires 48 credits. Coursework rotates by quarter; at least one LSJ elective is offered each quarter, and students may begin the concentration in any quarter. Classes are scheduled in the evenings to fit working schedules.

• Sample LSJ electives include: Deconstructing “The Village”: Critical and Global Perspectives on Educational Contexts; Theories of Change and Pathways for Action; Pedagogy, Power, & Control; Building Responsive School, Family, and Community Partnerships; Researching the Impact of School: Reproducing Social Class or Enabling Mobility?; Becoming a Race-Conscious Educator.
• Courses from the Urban Environmental Education Program may also qualify as LSJ electives depending on availability and approval.
• Learning emphases include systems of power shaping schooling (race, social class, criminalization, globalization, immigration), facilitation and organizational leadership skills, and strategies for identifying and addressing unjust structures.
