A 3-credit undergraduate course introducing AI concepts and their applied use in animal healthcare and management. Suited to veterinary students or practitioners who want to evaluate and use AI tools responsibly in diagnostics, herd management and clinical practice.
This 3-credit course examines how artificial intelligence can transform animal healthcare and management. It presents core AI concepts alongside real-world veterinary tools and focuses on ethical, legal and societal considerations affecting the profession.
Core topics are drawn from practical applications and current tools. Students study AI fundamentals in veterinary contexts and review emerging systems such as VetCT, CattleEye and eCow. The syllabus covers AI use across animal management, diagnostics, treatment planning, animal welfare and practice management, and trains students to critically interpret AI-related developments.
Prerequisite: VMED105 with a minimum grade of D.
Graduates gain the analytical perspective needed to assess and incorporate AI tools into clinical work, herd health programs and practice management. The course supports roles that intersect veterinary practice and technology evaluation, including positions in clinical services, diagnostics, farm management and technology adoption within veterinary settings.
