A practice-oriented six-semester bachelor that trains students to build and apply software for analysing large biological data sets. It suits applicants who like biology and want to work at the interface with computer science, with interest in mathematics, chemistry and programming.

What you'll study

Early semesters provide foundations across mathematics, biology, chemistry, computer science and introductory bioinformatics. The programme lists specific modules with weekly hours (SWS) and credit points. Examples include:

  • Semester 1: Programmieren 1, Theoretische Informatik 1, Mathematik 1, Chemie für Bioinformatik, Bioinformatik 1 (total ~30 CrP).
  • Semester 2: Programmieren 2, Theoretische Informatik 2, Mathematik 2, Allgemeine Biologie, Bioinformatik 2 mit Projekt (total ~30 CrP).
  • Semester 3: Algorithmen der Bioinformatik, Molekularbiologie, Statistik und Datenanalyse, plus Wahlpflichtmodule.
  • Semester 4: Software Engineering: Konzepte und Methoden, Computational Biology, Biodatenanalyse, Biochemie für Bioinformatik, plus Wahlpflichtmodule.
  • Semester 5: Software Engineering: Realisierung; Current Topics in Bioinformatics; Wahlpflichtmodule.
  • Semester 6: Praxisphase (15 CrP) and Bachelorarbeit mit Kolloquium (15 CrP).

The programme includes a wide Wahlpflichtmodule (electives) catalogue covering topics such as Deep Learning on biological sequences; Data Science in Biology; Proteinkristallographie; Computer-assisted drug design; High Performance Computing; Machine Learning (and Advanced Topics); Natural Language Processing; databases, IT security, visualization and other computer science subjects. Entry requirements

The course language is German. Admission is zulassungsfrei: if you enrol in the official immatriculation periods and fulfil the university's enrolment requirements you are admitted.
