What you'll study

The English Language and Literature major combines study of literature from medieval to contemporary periods with practised training in writing, research and textual analysis. You will explore survey courses in British and American literature, thematic and period modules such as Shakespeare, Romanticism, modernism and contemporary fiction, and elective options including poetry, drama and children’s literature.

Coursework typically includes:

• Foundations in Literary Studies — introduction to close reading, literary terminology and critical reading strategies.
• Surveys of British and American Literature — chronological study of major authors and movements.
• Specialist seminars — topics such as Shakespeare, modern drama, Victorian literature, African American literature and postcolonial studies.
• Literary Theory and Research Methods — theory, interpretation and academic research skills.
• Creative Writing — workshops in fiction, nonfiction and poetry to develop craft and revision practice.
• Language-focused modules — courses examining the history, structure and social use of English.
• Applied learning — internships, editing and publishing practicum, and opportunities for community-engaged writing.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a secondary school diploma or equivalent. Admissions decisions consider academic record, strength of English and writing courses, and the personal statement. Prospective students may be asked to supply one or more letters of recommendation and a writing sample or portfolio in support of their application.

Keuka College welcomes transfer students with college transcripts for credit evaluation. International applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency through recognised testing or other evidence of prior English-medium study. Mature applicants and those with non-traditional backgrounds are considered on an individual basis.
