What you'll study

The programme combines a liberal arts foundation with core nursing science and practice. You will study human anatomy and physiology, microbiology, pharmacology, pathophysiology, and health assessment before moving into progressively advanced nursing courses that cover acute and chronic care, maternal-child health, mental health nursing, community and public health, and gerontological nursing.

Specialist strands within the curriculum emphasise:

• Clinical Nursing: advanced clinical assessment, complex care management, simulation-based skills development and supervised clinical placements in acute and community settings.
• Nursing Administration: leadership and management in healthcare, quality improvement, organisational behaviour, finance and resource management for nursing services.
• Nursing Research: research methods, nursing inquiry, evidence-based practice, statistics, and a research or capstone project that applies research principles to practice problems.

The programme integrates laboratory and simulation work with clinical practicums in regional hospitals, community clinics and long-term care facilities. A capstone or senior practicum typically demonstrates clinical competence and readiness for professional registration. Coursework also covers professional ethics, health policy and culturally competent care, reflecting Berea’s liberal-arts emphasis on critical thinking and social responsibility.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a high school diploma or equivalent with a strong academic record and evidence of preparedness in science and mathematics. Typical preparation includes coursework in biology and chemistry; applicants with prior college-level credits in these areas will be considered. Berea looks for candidates who demonstrate commitment to service, interpersonal skills and the ability to manage the demands of clinical study.

Additional requirements for nursing clinical placements generally include a satisfactory background check, up-to-date immunisations, health clearance, basic life-support (CPR) certification, and successful completion of any required skills screening. International applicants should demonstrate English language proficiency and provide documentation of equivalent academic preparation.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared to sit for the national licensure examination for registered nurses and to enter practice across a broad range of settings. Common early-career roles include staff nurse in medical–surgical units, emergency departments, maternity and paediatrics, community and public health nursing, and long-term care.

With experience or further education, alumni move into roles such as nurse manager or administrator, clinical nurse specialist, nurse educator, case manager, infection control practitioner, and nurse researcher. The research strand also prepares graduates for graduate study (master’s and doctoral programmes) leading to advanced clinical practice, leadership and academic careers.
