What you'll study

The programme combines foundations in data science and statistics with applied modules that link analytics to managerial decision-making. Core topics typically include data management and processing, predictive modelling and machine learning, optimisation and decision analytics, causal inference and econometrics, and data visualisation for communication. Teaching is delivered through a mix of lectures, hands-on computer labs, case studies and group projects to apply methods to real business problems.

Most students complete a substantial applied project or dissertation supervised by academic staff or in partnership with an external organisation. There is also scope to choose optional modules that reflect different career pathways—examples include advanced machine learning, operations research, marketing analytics, risk analytics and topics in strategic management or entrepreneurship.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good undergraduate degree (equivalent to a UK upper second-class honours) in a quantitative discipline such as mathematics, statistics, economics, engineering, computer science or business with substantial quantitative content. Demonstrable quantitative skills are important—courses in calculus, linear algebra, probability and statistics, and some programming experience (for example in Python, R, SQL or similar) strengthen an application.

Professional experience in a quantitative role can be an advantage, particularly for candidates whose first degree is less quantitatively focused. All applicants whose first language is not English will need to meet the School’s English language requirements through an accepted qualification.

Graduates go on to roles that translate data into strategic insight and operational improvements. Typical job titles include data scientist, business analyst, analytics consultant, operations research analyst, and forecasting or risk analyst. Employers are found across sectors such as management consulting, financial services, retail and e‑commerce, technology, healthcare and the public sector.
