What you'll study

This programme combines core modules that build essential laboratory and analytical skills with a wide choice of optional modules so you can tailor your degree to your interests. Early years focus on foundations in cell and molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, physiology and ecology, together with practical laboratory training and statistics for biologists.

In later years you select from options such as microbiology, immunology, developmental biology, molecular genetics, bioinformatics, ecophysiology, animal behaviour, conservation biology and environmental management. Teaching is delivered through lectures, practical classes, small-group tutorials and seminars, and you will complete a substantial independent research project in your final year, often working alongside academic research groups.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have strong secondary-level science qualifications, with particular emphasis on biology or a related science (chemistry, human biology, or equivalent). Typical offers request specific grades at A level (or equivalent) and may ask for one science subject at A level; equivalent international qualifications are accepted. Applicants without traditional qualifications may be considered on the basis of relevant work experience, access courses or foundation years. You will also need to meet the University's English language requirements if your previous education was not delivered in English.
