What you'll study

The programme combines core engineering principles with specialist environmental modules to develop the skills needed to assess, design and manage systems for water, waste and contaminated land. Study is delivered through lectures, laboratory and fieldwork, computing and modelling sessions, and a substantial individual research project.

• Core topics: environmental systems and processes, environmental chemistry, hydraulics and hydrology for engineered systems, and environmental monitoring techniques.
• Specialist modules: water and wastewater engineering, solid waste management, contaminated land assessment and remediation, pollution control technologies, and environmental modelling (including use of GIS and numerical models).
• Professional and management modules: environmental impact assessment, environmental management and regulation, risk assessment and sustainability appraisal.
• Research project/dissertation: an independent research or design project supervised by academic staff; projects often involve laboratory testing, field measurements, modelling or industry placement-style collaborations.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good honours degree in engineering, environmental science, chemistry, physics, or a closely related discipline. Candidates with substantial relevant professional experience or a qualification in a related subject may also be considered.

Overseas applicants must demonstrate proficiency in English through an appropriate recognised qualification. Admissions decisions are made on the basis of academic record, references and, where relevant, professional experience; some applicants may be invited to interview.

Graduates progress to technical and managerial roles across the water industry, environmental consultancies, waste and resource management companies, remediation firms, regulators and local authorities.
