What you'll study

The JD Pathway provides an intensive programme of core legal modules designed to give you the substantive and procedural knowledge expected of an undergraduate law degree, together with advanced legal research and professional skills. Teaching is a mix of lectures, small-group seminars, workshops and assessed coursework. Typical modules include:

• Contract Law – formation, terms, remedies and common defences.
• Tort Law – negligence, liability, defences and policy considerations.
• Criminal Law – substantive offences, defences and culpability.
• Public/Constitutional Law – constitutional principles, administrative law and human rights.
• Property and Land Law – interests in land, conveyancing principles and landlord/tenant regulation.
• Equity and Trusts – fiduciary duties, trusts and equitable remedies.
• Commercial/Business Law – business structures, key commercial transactions and regulatory frameworks.
• Legal Research and Dissertation/Project – independent research under supervision, culminating in a substantial written project.
• Professional Skills and Practice – advocacy, negotiation, legal drafting, client interviewing and ethics.

Assessment combines essays, problem questions, presentations, practical skills assessments and a dissertation or major research project. There are opportunities for mooting, pro bono work through legal clinics and short placements with firms or organisations, which help build practical experience.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good undergraduate degree in any discipline. Typical entry is at the equivalent of a UK second-class honours degree (2:2 or above), though offers may vary according to applicant profile and experience. International qualifications are considered on their merits; applicants should provide certified transcripts and a degree equivalence statement where appropriate.

Applicants must supply a personal statement outlining motivation for legal study and any relevant experience, and at least one academic or professional reference. Relevant work or voluntary experience in law, public policy or dispute resolution can strengthen an application.

English language proficiency is required for applicants whose first language is not English. Swansea University accepts a range of recognised qualifications and tests; typical evidence would be an accepted English language test at a level appropriate for postgraduate study.
