What you'll study

This programme blends modules in molecular and applied biotechnology with business, regulatory and management subjects to develop both technical competence and commercial awareness. Teaching typically includes lectures, laboratory practicals, case studies, group projects and an independent research or consultancy dissertation.

• Core science and laboratory skills: advanced molecular biology techniques, cellular and protein biology, translational medicine, assay development and quality management for regulated environments.
• Data and analytical methods: bioinformatics and statistical approaches for biomedical data, experimental design and interpretation relevant to drug discovery and diagnostics development.
• Drug development and regulation: clinical trial design basics, regulatory affairs, safety assessment, and pathways to market for therapeutics and medical devices.
• Business and management: modules in innovation management, business strategy, finance and accounting basics for life sciences, marketing for biotechnology products, entrepreneurship and commercialisation.
• Intellectual property and ethics: IP management, licensing, commercial contracts, research ethics and public health policy considerations.
• Projects and dissertation: a team consultancy-style project or industry-linked module, followed by an individual research or business-focused dissertation that applies scientific methods to a translational or commercial challenge.

Entry requirements

Applicants are usually expected to hold a good UK undergraduate degree (typically a 2:1 or equivalent) in a relevant subject such as biomedical science, biotechnology, biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, pharmacology or a related chemical or life sciences discipline. Candidates with a lower-class degree combined with substantial and relevant industrial or research experience may also be considered.

For applicants whose first language is not English, the university requires evidence of proficiency in English. Typical acceptable qualifications include recognised tests such as IELTS or TOEFL at the level set by the university for postgraduate study.

Selection may also take account of references, personal statement, and, where relevant, evidence of laboratory or industry experience. Some applicants may be invited for interview.
