What you'll study

This programme combines subject-specialist Art & Design study with master's-level modules in curriculum, pedagogy and professional practice. Core areas include curriculum design for secondary Art & Design, subject-specific methodology (drawing, painting, print, sculpture, contemporary media and digital practices), assessment for learning, inclusive and differentiated practice, classroom management, and the integration of technology into creative learning. You will also study research methods in education and complete a substantial master's-level research project or professional enquiry that links theory to classroom practice.

The course is delivered through a blend of taught sessions, studio practice, school-based professional placements and collaborative projects with partner schools. Substantial placements in secondary schools enable you to plan, teach and reflect on a full range of age-appropriate Art & Design experiences, from expressive and contextual studies to design-based briefs and practical project assessments.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold an undergraduate degree in Art, Design or a closely related subject. Typical offers are made to candidates with a good honours degree; those with a lower classification but with significant relevant experience or an outstanding portfolio may also be considered. You will be asked to submit a portfolio of recent practical work and examples of creative practice or teaching-related activity, and to attend an interview.

Additional requirements include satisfactory references, a Disclosure Scotland/PVG check, and evidence of fitness to teach (health and occupational checks as required). International applicants should demonstrate proficiency in English. Applicants with relevant classroom or youth-work experience will be at an advantage.

Career prospects

Graduates leave qualified to teach Art & Design in secondary schools and may be eligible to register with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) or equivalent professional bodies elsewhere, subject to meeting local requirements. Typical career destinations include secondary school teacher of Art & Design, faculty or department lead, curriculum developer, education officer in museums and galleries, further education lecturer, creative arts coordinator for local authorities, and roles in arts education outreach.

Many graduates combine classroom teaching with freelance creative practice, gallery education, or progression to senior leadership and specialist roles such as subject network coordinator, advisory teacher, or further postgraduate research in education.
