What you'll study

The programme integrates subject-specialist study in English with professional studies in pedagogy, assessment and classroom practice. Typical taught modules cover contemporary approaches to teaching literature and language, curriculum design for secondary English, development of literacy across the curriculum, inclusive practice and meeting additional support needs, assessment for learning and classroom management techniques. You will study research methods in education and complete a sustained professional enquiry or dissertation that links classroom practice to educational research.

A central feature of the programme is substantial school-based professional placements in partner secondary schools. Placements are organised across the course to provide progressively increased responsibility, including planning and delivering sequences of lessons, managing classes, and undertaking professional duties. Workshops, seminar-based sessions and observed teaching, together with reflective professional portfolios, support the transition from theory to practice.

Entry requirements

• A good honours degree in English, English Literature, English Language, or a closely related humanities discipline. Applicants with other degrees will be considered if they can demonstrate substantial prior learning or experience in English.
• Academic transcripts and references that support your ability to study at postgraduate level.
• Experience of working with young people in educational or youth settings is highly desirable and may be requested as evidence of commitment to teaching.
• Fitness to practise and safeguarding checks are required; you will need to provide an enhanced disclosure (PVG scheme in Scotland) and satisfactory health and character declarations prior to placement.
• Applicants whose first language is not English will need to meet the programme's English language requirements as set by the university.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for Qualified Teacher Status and registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland and typically take up roles as secondary English teachers in state and independent schools. Career pathways include subject leadership (e.g. Head of English), literacy coordination, faculty management and pastoral roles. With classroom experience and further qualifications, graduates often move into senior leadership, curricular development, educational policy, teacher education or specialist roles such as supporting learners with additional support needs. The programme also provides a foundation for doctoral study or careers in educational research, publishing and curriculum consultancy.
