What you'll study

This honours degree provides a thorough foundation across the main areas of psychology while developing practical research skills. In the early stages you study core topics such as introduction to psychology, biological bases of behaviour, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, social psychology and fundamental research methods and statistics. As you progress you encounter more specialised subjects such as perception and attention, learning, personality and individual differences, psychopathology, and cognitive neuroscience.

The programme places strong emphasis on empirical skills: you will gain hands-on experience with experimental design, quantitative and qualitative methods, statistical analysis and ethical research practice. In the final year you typically complete an independent empirical project or dissertation under academic supervision and choose from a range of option modules that reflect staff research strengths and applied areas — examples include health psychology, forensic psychology, occupational psychology, developmental disorders, applied cognitive neuroscience, and research placements.

Entry requirements

Entry is competitive and applicants are expected to have strong academic qualifications. Typical offers are made on the basis of A-levels or equivalent qualifications; applicants holding alternative qualifications such as BTEC, Scottish Highers, Irish Leaving Certificate or international qualifications are also considered. Most applicants will also need to meet the University’s English language requirements if English is not their first language.

Successful applicants usually demonstrate an interest in scientific approaches to behaviour and experience, experience of working with people or research-related activities (where available), and relevant GCSE-level passes in English and mathematics or equivalent. The Admissions team can advise on specific qualification combinations and equivalencies.

Career prospects

Graduates from Swansea’s psychology degree follow a wide range of careers across the public, private and voluntary sectors. The degree provides the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC) with the British Psychological Society where the programme meets accreditation requirements, which is the essential first step for progression to professional training routes in clinical, educational, occupational or forensic psychology.

Alumni go on to roles in areas such as mental health services, research and data analysis, human resources, learning and development, user experience and design, public health, teaching and social care. Many graduates also choose further study — MSc programmes, professional Doctorates (e.g. clinical, educational) or research degrees (MPhil/PhD) — to specialise or to gain chartered practitioner status.
