What you'll study

This interdisciplinary degree brings together modules in philosophy, politics (including international relations) and economics so you build conceptual clarity, empirical understanding and quantitative skills. Typical first-year modules introduce micro- and macro-economics, principles of political analysis and comparative politics, introductory political theory and core philosophy topics such as logic, ethics and epistemology.

In later years you specialise by choosing option modules across the three disciplines. Economics options commonly include public economics, econometrics and development economics; politics modules cover public policy, political behaviour, international relations and European politics; philosophy options include moral and political philosophy, philosophy of science and philosophy of mind. Research methods and quantitative techniques are integrated to support empirical analysis, and there are opportunities to complete a supervised dissertation or capstone project in your chosen area of interest.

Swansea's PPE encourages interdisciplinary assessment formats: essays, policy briefs, quantitative problem sets, presentations and a final-year research project. There may also be opportunities to take optional modules from related subject areas and to undertake placements or periods of study abroad where available.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to have completed secondary-level qualifications equivalent to UK A-levels or relevant international qualifications. Admissions typically look for strong performance across a range of subjects rather than a single specialist background. A quantitative GCSE or equivalent (for example, Mathematics) is often desirable because of the economics and methods elements of the degree.

Swansea also accepts a variety of qualification routes including BTEC, Irish and Scottish qualifications, and international school-leaving certificates; mature students and applicants with relevant work experience are considered. Applicants whose first language is not English must meet the University's English language requirements.

Graduates of PPE are well placed for careers that require analytical reasoning, clear communication and policy awareness. Common destinations include civil service and public administration, policy and research roles in think tanks and NGOs, journalism and media, finance and consultancy, and roles in international organisations. The combination of philosophy, politics and economics also provides a solid foundation for postgraduate study in law, public policy, international relations, economics or philosophy.

Employability is supported through structured skills development in research methods, data analysis and written/oral presentation, plus career service support, placements and networking opportunities with employers.
