What you'll study

The programme builds a foundation in circuit theory, analogue and digital electronics, signals and systems, electromagnetism and power engineering before progressing to more specialised topics. In early years you study mathematical methods for engineers, basic electronics, programming and laboratory techniques. Intermediate and final years typically cover subjects such as embedded systems and microcontrollers, analogue and digital signal processing, control engineering, power electronics and machines, communications and wireless systems, and electronic materials.

Practical work is embedded throughout the degree: laboratory classes, electronics and instrumentation workshops, PCB design and testing, software development for embedded platforms, and team design projects. Most students complete an individual final‑year project that applies theoretical knowledge to a real engineering problem, often in collaboration with an industrial partner or a research group.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to have strong attainment in mathematics and a science subject (usually physics) at A level or equivalent. Typical offers are in the range of strong passes at A level, with Mathematics required and Physics highly recommended. Applicants with vocational qualifications such as BTEC, T‑level, an Access to HE diploma, or international qualifications (including the International Baccalaureate) are considered where learning outcomes are comparable. GCSEs in English and Mathematics at a good grade are also normally required.

Swansea University welcomes mature students and those with relevant work experience; such applicants are assessed on the strength of their portfolio and prior learning. English language proficiency must be demonstrated by international applicants who do not have prior education in English.
