What you'll study

This masters pre-registration programme combines theory, research and extensive practice-based learning to equip you with the knowledge and skills required for contemporary occupational therapy practice. Teaching covers occupational science and the core models and frameworks that underpin assessment, intervention and outcome measurement. You will study modules in clinical reasoning, therapeutic use of occupation, musculoskeletal and neurological rehabilitation, mental health practice, paediatrics and vocational/community-based approaches.

The course is delivered through a mix of lectures, seminars, simulation and supervised practice placements. You will also complete a research methods module and an applied research or service-evaluation project that develops skills in evidence-based practice. Clinical placements are provided across NHS, social care and third-sector settings, allowing experience in acute, community and specialist services under the supervision of qualified occupational therapists.

Entry requirements

Applicants normally need a UK honours degree in any discipline or an equivalent international qualification. Keele typically expects a good second-class honours degree, with applicants holding lower classifications considered if they can demonstrate substantial, relevant health or social care experience and evidence of academic potential. Successful applicants must usually provide references, a personal statement outlining motivation and experience, and may be invited to an interview.

All students must meet professional fitness-to-practise requirements, which include occupational health screening and an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check or international equivalent. International applicants whose first language is not English must provide an approved English language qualification at the level required by the university and professional regulator.

Career prospects

Graduates of this programme are eligible to apply for registration with the UK health and care professional regulator and to practise as occupational therapists. Typical first roles are in NHS community and acute services, social care, specialist rehabilitation centres, mental health teams, paediatric services and education settings. There are also opportunities in the private and voluntary sectors offering vocational rehabilitation, ergonomic assessment and community inclusion services.

With experience, occupational therapists progress to specialist clinical roles (for example in neurological rehabilitation, hand therapy, vocational rehabilitation or mental health), leadership and service development posts, research and teaching. The programme’s research and service-evaluation training also provides a foundation for postgraduate study and doctoral research.
