This programme integrates academic study with practice learning to develop the knowledge, values and skills required for professional social work. Core areas of study typically include social work theory and practice, human growth and development, social policy, law and ethics, safeguarding and child protection, mental health, substance misuse and approaches to working with people with multiple and complex needs.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a completed secondary school qualification or an equivalent accredited qualification suitable for undergraduate study. Typical academic routes include A-levels, BTEC/other vocational diplomas, or an Access to Higher Education diploma. Mature applicants with relevant work or volunteer experience in health, social care, education or the voluntary sector are encouraged to apply.

Admission normally includes a values-based recruitment process: an application review, an interview (which may include written or scenario-based tasks) and demonstration of personal suitability for social work. Successful applicants will be required to pass an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, provide occupational health clearance and meet fitness-to-practise requirements before beginning practice placements.

Career prospects

Graduates of the BA (Hons) Social Work leave prepared to practise as social workers and are eligible to apply to register with Social Work England, enabling employment in statutory social work posts. Graduates frequently work in:
