What you'll study

The programme combines political theory, comparative politics, international relations and public policy with training in qualitative and quantitative research methods. In the first year you build a foundation in key areas such as political ideas, the structure of the UK state, comparative institutions and introductions to international politics and political research methods. In later years you choose more specialised modules—examples include political behaviour and public opinion, political economy, global governance, security and conflict, European politics, human rights, and policy analysis.

Teaching is delivered through lectures, seminars and small-group tutorials. Assessment typically mixes essays, timed examinations, policy briefs, presentations and a substantial independent final-year dissertation or research project. Students can often take optional modules from related disciplines such as sociology, history, law and languages, and there are routes that include an optional placement year or study abroad to gain practical experience.

Entry requirements

Admission is selective and based on academic achievement and the potential to succeed in a rigorous social science degree. Typical requirements include successful completion of a recognised secondary school qualification such as A‑levels, International Baccalaureate, or an equivalent international qualification. Applicants with vocational qualifications (for example BTEC) and mature students with relevant experience are also considered.

Specific offers vary by applicant profile; conditional offers generally ask for strong subject performance across three main qualifications. All applicants are assessed on the full UCAS application, including personal statement and references. Where English is not a first language, an approved English language qualification is required.
