What you'll study

The curriculum integrates practical and theoretical components and embeds assessment in workplace practice so students can demonstrate how key theories and concepts apply to their own settings. Core topics and learning activities include:

• Current issues, policies and debates in social policy and the care sector, including analysis of diversity (race, class, gender, sexuality, age, disability) and welfare provision across the lifespan.
• Critical examination of life-course approaches that describe stages or phases of development and how cultural and gender factors shape services.
• Development of a practice portfolio and a research project focusing on individual working environments and career pathways.
• Applied synthesis of theory and research with emphasis on critical evaluation of both theoretical ideas and professional practice.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold an FdA/FdSc or an equivalent Level 5 qualification in an appropriate subject. The course is delivered full-time over one year with typical start in September at the East Coast College (Great Yarmouth). Students are normally expected to be working in a relevant paid or voluntary role for at least 10 hours per week. Career prospects

Graduates commonly progress to support and senior support roles across education, residential care, community care, substance-abuse and rehabilitation services, and custodial environments. The degree also prepares students for postgraduate study, for example MA Social Work, MA Childhood Studies, MSc Nursing (pre-registration accelerated routes) or PGCE pathways.
