What you'll study

Students cover a broad range of scientific and midwifery topics in early stages and then study those topics in greater depth. The emphasis is on normal childbirth and pregnancy as the foundation for later modules on complex midwifery care. By the third year the programme prepares students to function as autonomous, proficient midwives able to plan, implement and evaluate care for women, newborns, families and communities. A compulsory research project is carried out in the second year at an approved site under departmental supervision.

Entry requirements

• Must meet the University's general admission requirements.
• Registered with the Nurses Council of Zimbabwe as a midwife.
• Minimum of two years' post-diploma midwifery experience.
• At least five O-Level passes at Grade C or better, including English, Mathematics and a Science subject.

Career prospects

Graduates receive a BSc Honours degree in Midwifery and are prepared to register and practice as professional midwives in autonomous and collaborative roles. Career paths include clinical midwifery, management and administration of maternity services, education and training, research and public health advocacy in government, private and non-governmental organisations. The programme also provides a pathway to postgraduate study at Masters and PhD levels.
