Programme overview

The Bachelor of Health Services Management Honours develops professionals able to plan, manage and improve health services with attention to quality, access and sustainability. The curriculum emphasises healthcare systems, policy, governance, leadership, ethical practice and socially responsible decision-making, combining theoretical study with practical and experiential learning.

What you'll study

Core learning covers health systems and policies, healthcare planning and governance, management and leadership skills, programme and project management, research methods and evidence-based decision-making. The programme includes a compulsory Research Project completed during the second year at an approved site under departmental supervision. Students must have at least 40 hours of consultation with their supervisor, submit two spiral-bound copies of the project, and the dissertation is assessed by two examiners according to Faculty Board format.

Entry requirements

Applicants must have five O-level passes with credit in English Language and Mathematics plus any three from Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Physics with Chemistry, Geography, Statistics, Integrated Science, Computer Studies, Business Studies Accounts, Commerce. In addition, candidates need at least two A-level subjects (or equivalent) from Biology, Geography, Chemistry, Physics, Statistics, Accounting, Economics, Mathematics/Applied Mathematics, or Management of Business.

Graduates receive the Bachelor of Health Services Management Honours Degree and may register with relevant professional bodies in Zimbabwe and abroad. Employment options span public and private sectors including hospitals, physicians' offices, insurance firms and residential care. Typical roles listed by the programme include hospital administrator, health services manager/director, healthcare facility operations manager, department manager/director, physician practice manager, healthcare finance manager and quality and improvement manager.
