What you'll study

Teaching emphasises advanced clinical decision-making and practical competencies for out-of-hospital care. Core areas drawn from the programme specification include:

• Advanced principles of assessment, management and stabilisation of the acutely ill and injured in non-hospital environments.
• Pre-hospital clinical practice, including the role and operation of ambulance and other transport modalities (ground ambulances, rotary- and fixed-wing air ambulances, water ambulances).
• Use of communication systems for effective, respectful interaction with patients, families and healthcare teams.
• Leadership, teamwork and management of emergency medical services and emergency departments.
• Principles of disaster management and organised responses to mass-casualty or disaster situations.
• Ethical, legal and regulatory issues governing EMS activities.
• Research methods and a mandatory research project completed in the second year under academic supervision (minimum of 40 consultation hours; submission of two spiral-bound copies; assessed by two examiners).

Entry requirements

• Five O-Level subjects including English, Mathematics and a Science subject.
• A-Levels are an advantage.
• A diploma or degree in a related health discipline is required, examples given include: Diploma in Paramedics, Diploma in EMT, Certificate in Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Medical Doctor, Registered General Nurse with advanced trauma care or post-basic training in Intensive Care, Anaesthesia or Emergency Care Nursing.
• At least two years' working experience in EMS is an added requirement.
• Registration with the Allied Health Professions Council or an equivalent regulatory body is mandatory for programme participation and clinical placement; maintaining registration is the student's responsibility.

Career prospects

Graduates receive a BSc (Hons) in Emergency Medical Care and are prepared to take leadership roles in emergency departments, ambulance services and EMS programme management. The qualification supports functions as a clinical practitioner, communicator, collaborator, manager and educator; it also prepares candidates for further postgraduate study at master’s and doctoral levels.
