Programme overview

This three-year, semesterised pre-service diploma develops practical and theoretical competence for working with children aged zero to eight. The curriculum emphasises child development from conception through age eight, inclusive practice for diverse needs, and integration of psychological, sociological and philosophical perspectives into ECD work.

What you'll study

Students must complete a minimum total of nineteen courses plus a project (the project carries the weight of two courses). In year one learners take ten courses. Progression to year two requires a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher. Year two consists primarily of teaching practice delivered over three school terms. In year three students take nine courses and must pass Introduction to Research Methods in the first semester before registering for the project. Assessment for each course combines coursework (30%) and a final examination (70%).

Entry requirements

Applicants must have at least five O-Level subjects, which must include English, Mathematics and a Science subject.

Graduates are prepared for roles in a range of child-focused settings, including primary schools, ECD centres, children’s hospitals, prisons, institutions affiliated with the uniformed forces, civil society organisations, faith-based groups and non-governmental organisations.
