Programme overview

The programme emphasises problem-solving in conservation and environmental management, focusing on human use, control and protection of natural resources. Students learn to assess interactions among atmosphere, lithosphere, biosphere and hydrosphere and to interpret policy and regulations relevant to environmental protection. The curriculum also supports entrepreneurship aimed at sustainable manufacturing, waste-based products and bio-based inputs.

What you'll study

Study extends over four years delivered full‑time, block release or weekend classes across two semesters per academic year. Core learning covers scientific and technical research using biological, chemical and geospatial approaches; environmental assessment and evaluation of policy; occupational health and safety; sanitation and disaster management; and innovation for sustainable production (for example products from waste, bio-based fertilisers, fuels and pesticides).

• Investigation of interactions between atmosphere, lithosphere, biosphere and hydrosphere
• Laboratory and field research using biological, chemical and geospatial methods
• Environmental problem analysis and policy/regulation interpretation
• Entrepreneurial approaches to sustainable manufacturing and waste valorisation
• Workplace attachment in the third year with two formal assessments and submission of a log book, station supervisor report and assessors' reports
• Final‑semester research project supervised by Faculty staff; dissertation (80%) and presentation (20%), assessed by two examiners
• Assessment regime: continuous assessment (40%) and formal semester examination (60%); students must attain a minimum of 50% in coursework to sit final exams; examiners may require oral examinations

Entry requirements

• Minimum five Ordinary Level subjects/National Foundation Certificate including English Language, Mathematics and a Science subject at grade C or better
• Normal entry: at least two A‑level passes
• Special entry: holders of a Diploma in Environmental Management or a related field from a recognised institution
• Mature entry: minimum age 23 and at least two years of relevant industrial experience

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for roles across public and private sectors including natural resources management, pollution prevention and control, air and water quality monitoring, environmental consultancy for engineering and planning, mining and land‑use, and WASH programmes. Typical positions include environmental consultant, SHE officer/manager, environmental manager, nature conservation officer, sustainability consultant, waste management officer, hydrologist, environmental microbiologist, water quality scientist, and environmental toxicologist; graduates also gain skills to start environmental management businesses.
