What you'll study

The programme blends intensive Chinese language instruction with courses in Chinese linguistics, classical and modern Chinese literature, and interdisciplinary cultural studies. Students progress through a structured language sequence from beginner to advanced levels (or follow an accelerated/heritage track after placement), while also taking core modules in literary analysis and linguistic theory.

• Language sequence: Contemporary Chinese (elementary through advanced), spoken Chinese, pronunciation and tones, and conversation and composition workshops.
• Literature modules: Introduction to Classical Chinese, Modern Chinese Literature (20th and 21st centuries), Chinese poetry, fiction and drama, and thematic seminars such as urban literature, gender and narrative, and literature and film.
• Linguistics modules: Introduction to Linguistics, Chinese Phonology and Morphosyntax, Language Change in Chinese, sociolinguistics of Chinese varieties (Mandarin, Cantonese, regional dialects), and language acquisition.
• Translation and applied skills: Chinese–English translation practice, literary translation, interpretation workshop, and professional writing for bilingual contexts.
• Electives and interdisciplinary options: courses in East Asian history, comparative literature, film studies, digital humanities, and courses from departments such as international relations or business to support career goals.
• Capstone and research: a senior capstone project or honours thesis involving original research, translation project, or practicum combining language and literary study.

Students often take advantage of Pace’s general education requirements to build skills in research methods, critical theory and information literacy, and are encouraged to complete a study-abroad period in Greater China or a practicum in a New York-based cultural institution.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a recognised secondary-school diploma. Successful candidates typically present a strong academic record with demonstrated aptitude in language studies or humanities subjects. Typical requirements include:

• A competitive high-school GPA or equivalent qualifications (for transfer applicants, college GPA is considered).
• Standardised test results where required by the university; consult Pace’s admissions office for current policy on SAT/ACT.
• For non-native English speakers, proof of English proficiency through recognised tests (TOEFL, IELTS) or equivalent evidence of English-medium instruction.
• Previous study of Chinese is helpful but not always required; applicants with prior Mandarin or other Chinese-language study may be given placement testing to determine the appropriate language level.
• Optional supporting materials: personal statement outlining interest in Chinese language and literature, letters of recommendation, and a writing sample if requested for honours or research tracks.
