What you'll study

The programme combines core project management theory with practical, industry-relevant modules and an independent project. Teaching emphasises lifecycle management, risk and finance, commercial awareness and people-centred leadership so you learn both the technical and behavioural aspects of successful delivery.

• Core project disciplines: project planning and control, scheduling, earned value and cost management, risk management and quality assurance.
• Business and commercial topics: business case development, project finance, procurement strategy and contract management.
• Leadership and people skills: stakeholder management, organisational behaviour, team leadership, negotiation and change management.
• Methods and delivery approaches: programme and portfolio management, Agile and lean approaches, systems thinking and benefits realisation.
• Research and independent project: a substantial dissertation or applied project with an industry partner, supported by research methods and project consultancy modules.

Modules are delivered through a mix of lectures, workshops, case studies and industry guest sessions. Assessment typically includes group work, individual coursework, practical assignments and the final project. There are options to tailor study through electives and to engage with short industry placements or consultancy briefs where available.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good UK honours degree (typically a 2:1) or an international equivalent in engineering, management, science, technology or a related discipline. Candidates with a lower second-class degree together with significant professional experience in project-related roles may also be considered.

Selection takes into account academic background, relevant work experience and motivation for a career in project or programme management. Applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate competency in English in line with the university's postgraduate entry standards.

Graduates go on to careers as project managers, programme managers, PMO specialists, delivery leads and change managers across sectors such as manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, information technology, construction, energy, healthcare and consulting.
