What you'll study

The Bachelor of Design combines studio practice, theoretical study and professional project work. Core studio modules introduce drawing, making, prototyping and digital fabrication alongside workshops in materials, craft and production processes. You will study design thinking and research methods, human-centred design and usability, visual communication and typography, and elective topics that may include interaction design, service design, product design, fashion systems or design for sustainability.

Learning is project-driven and typically culminates in a capstone or major project where you define and realise a design solution from brief to prototype. Coursework balances technical skills (CAD, rapid prototyping, workshop practice, digital tools) with critical subjects such as design history, ethics and the social impact of design.

Teaching methods include studio-based projects, seminars, workshops, collaborative group work with students from other disciplines, and industry-linked briefs. Students have access to specialist facilities and maker spaces for prototyping, textiles, print and digital production.

Entry requirements

Admission to the Bachelor of Design normally requires university entrance from your secondary qualification (for example, New Zealand University Entrance or an equivalent international qualification). Applicants are expected to demonstrate creative potential; a portfolio of work is typically required and may be reviewed as part of the selection process. Some programmes or pathways may include an interview or additional submission requirements.
