What you'll study

This programme builds a foundation in physical geology, sedimentology, structural geology, stratigraphy and geochemistry, with integrated palaeontological training in taxonomy, taphonomy and evolutionary interpretation. Teaching is research-led and blends lectures, practical classes, laboratory analyses and extensive fieldwork.

Typical year-by-year structure:

• Year 1: introductory modules covering minerals and rocks, earth processes, basic palaeontology and geological mapping, plus core skills in data analysis and scientific communication.
• Year 2: intermediate modules in sedimentary systems, palaeoecology, fossil identification and interpretation, stratigraphic techniques and geochemical methods; increased lab work and small-group project work.
• Final year: advanced topics such as vertebrate and invertebrate palaeobiology, palaeobotany, basin analysis, isotope and geochronological methods, and a substantial independent research project under academic supervision.

Practical experience is emphasised: field courses in the UK (and typically an overseas field trip) teach mapping, sampling and stratigraphic techniques; laboratory sessions develop microscopy, thin-section preparation and basic geochemical and sedimentological analyses. Assessment mixes written exams, practical reports, project dissertations and oral presentations.

Entry requirements

Applicants should normally have A-levels or equivalent qualifications with strong achievement in at least one relevant science (for example Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics or Geology).
