It suits students who want practical skills building connected systems (for example Internet of Things and mobile contexts) and who are aiming for technical or applied roles in industry or further study.
The programme blends core information sciences topics with specialist study of ubiquitous and embedded systems. You will cover fundamentals such as programming, data structures, algorithms, databases and software engineering, alongside subjects specific to ubiquitous information systems: sensors and embedded hardware, wireless and wired networking, mobile application development, distributed systems, pervasive computing concepts and system integration. Complementary modules typically include human–computer interaction, cybersecurity basics, data analytics and mathematics or statistics for computing.
Study is a mix of lectures, labs and project work. Hands-on components emphasise building and deploying connected devices and services, working with microcontrollers and IoT platforms, designing user interactions for mobile and pervasive contexts, and integrating hardware with cloud or edge infrastructure. A substantial capstone or final-year project lets you apply your learning to a real-world problem, often in partnership with industry or as an independent research-led project.
Admission normally requires university entrance appropriate to New Zealand secondary education or an equivalent international qualification. Applicants are expected to have satisfactory literacy and numeracy preparation; prior study in mathematics or a quantitative subject is strongly recommended. While previous programming experience is beneficial, introductory programming is usually offered in the early stages of the degree so it is not an absolute requirement for all entrants.
