What you'll study

This honours programme covers the fundamentals of physical geology and the applied tools used to assess and manage environmental systems. Core themes include Earth surface processes and landform development, sedimentology and stratigraphy, mineralogy and geochemistry, hydrogeology and soil science, and the impacts of climate change on geological and coastal systems.

Teaching combines lectures, laboratory practicals, computer-based GIS and remote sensing sessions, and extensive fieldwork. Typical modules include:

Laboratory sessions teach sediment, soil and water analysis methods, and computing modules develop spatial data handling and modelling skills.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to demonstrate strengths in science-related subjects. Typical offers request A-levels including a science (Geography, Biology, Chemistry, Physics) or Mathematics, although related qualifications (BTEC, Scottish Highers, Irish Leaving Certificate, or the International Baccalaureate) are considered. Practical experience, an interest in outdoor work, and evidence of quantitative skills are advantageous.
