See the degree grade →A practice-focused Master of Education concentration that trains experienced educators to use the local community, built and natural environments as primary contexts for curriculum and student engagement. Suited to classroom teachers and school-based leaders who want to design integrated, community-connected learning and extend place-based approaches across grades and subjects.
Coursework combines theory and hands-on practice. Topics and learning activities include:
Application components required by the program are: completed online application with essay questions and program-specific materials; a resume or CV; official transcripts from all postsecondary institutions; two professional or academic letters of recommendation (non-relative); a non-refundable $50 application fee; and, if selected, an interview with a faculty member (in person, by phone, or via Skype). The program does not require GRE or other standardized tests. There are additional requirements for international applicants and for applicants without a bachelor’s degree. Graduates gain capacities to lead and implement place-based teaching and learning in a variety of contexts. Realistic outcomes include classroom teachers who integrate community-focused curricula, teacher-leaders who support place-based initiatives within schools, and educators who partner with local organizations to foster student civic participation and environmental stewardship. The concentration also connects students to a national and international network of place-based educators.
The university advises that most students use some form of financial aid and offers assistance to explore loans, scholarships and grants. Antioch provides a 10% tuition discount for groups of three or more students from the same school or district in AUNE Education MEd or Certificate programs, subject to conditions. Tuition for the MEd for Experienced Educators is published as $840 per credit with a total program credit requirement of 33; financial aid staff are available to help applicants understand cost and aid options.
