A 12-credit online graduate-level certificate that teaches idea generation, feasibility analysis, business planning and funding approaches for starting or growing small ventures. Suited to aspiring founders, owner-operators and professionals who want targeted, MBA-level entrepreneurship training without immediately committing to a full MBA.

What you'll study

The program combines required core courses and electives to cover practical startup skills:

  • Required (6 credits): MBA 503 Operations Management (3 credits); MBA 540 Entrepreneurship & Intrapreneurship (3 credits).
  • Choose two electives (6 credits): MBA 541 Business Information Systems for Small Business; MBA 542 Business Tax Planning; MBA 544 Small Business Management. Each elective is 3 credits.

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree. Most graduate business certificate programs at Ashland have prerequisites. Courses are delivered online via Blackboard. Credit for prior learning is available and can provide up to 9 credits toward a graduate business degree for previously earned, industry-recognized credentials.

Career prospects

The curriculum is designed to prepare students to launch, fund and operate small enterprises or to apply entrepreneurial methods inside existing organizations. The university offers placement support, internship opportunities and career services through the Career Center for Life Calling to help graduates translate coursework into employment or venture development.

Scholarships & funding angle

The certificate lists course costs per course and per credit on its site; there are financing options available through the Financial Aid Office. Students with relevant prior credentials may reduce their course load via credit for prior learning, and accepted certificate students can roll certificate coursework into the MBA to extend funding or scholarship strategies across a longer program of study.
