What you'll study

The BSN curriculum combines general education, foundational sciences and progressive nursing coursework to develop clinical competence, critical thinking and professional leadership. Early semesters emphasise anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology and health assessment. Core nursing modules introduce fundamentals of nursing, medical–surgical care, maternal–child health, paediatrics, mental health nursing and community/public health.

Practical learning is provided through laboratory simulation and supervised clinical placements in hospitals, community clinics and long‑term care settings. In the later stages of the programme students choose a focus strand—Nursing Administration, Nursing Research or Clinical Nursing—where they study topics such as healthcare management and finance, quality improvement and patient safety (Administration); research methods, biostatistics and evidence‑based practice (Research); or advanced clinical assessment, complex care management and speciality practicum experiences (Clinical Nursing).

The programme culminates in integrative practice courses and a capstone clinical experience that prepare graduates for transition to professional practice and eligibility to sit for the national licensure examination for registered nurses.

Entry requirements

• Secondary school completion or equivalent (high school diploma/GED) with a competitive overall GPA; specific minimums are set by the School of Nursing.
• Successful completion of prerequisite college or high‑school courses in biology (with lab), chemistry (with lab), English/composition and mathematics. Additional prerequisites such as human anatomy and physiology or microbiology are commonly required.
• Submission of a complete application to the School of Nursing, which may include academic transcripts, references and a personal statement demonstrating motivation for nursing.
• Passing an approved nursing entrance assessment or aptitude test (for example TEAS or equivalent) where required by the programme.
• Clearance of health and safety requirements prior to clinicals, which typically include immunisations, a current physical examination, drug screening and criminal background check.
• CPR/BLS certification prior to commencing clinical placements; additional licences or certifications may be required for certain practicums.

Career prospects

Graduates earn a degree that qualifies them to pursue initial RN licensure and to work in diverse healthcare settings. Common entry roles include staff nurse positions on medical–surgical wards, critical care units, emergency departments, maternity and paediatric units, and community/public health nursing.

Those who specialise in Nursing Administration can move into leadership and management roles such as charge nurse, nurse manager, unit director or positions in healthcare operations and policy. Graduates who focus on Nursing Research are equipped to work in research coordination, quality improvement teams, clinical trials and to support evidence‑based practice initiatives. The Clinical Nursing strand prepares graduates for advanced bedside practice and can be a stepping stone to postgraduate clinical specialisation or advanced practice training.
