What you'll study

This honours degree combines biomedical science with practical, patient‑facing training to develop competent, autonomous physiotherapists. Core areas of study include anatomy and physiology, biomechanics, clinical assessment and reasoning, musculoskeletal, neurological and cardiorespiratory physiotherapy, paediatrics and care of older adults. Modules emphasise evidence‑based practice, research methods, professional and ethical issues, communication skills and health promotion.

Teaching blends lectures, practical classes in skills laboratories, simulation and supervised practice. Manual therapy techniques, exercise prescription, electrotherapy principles, gait analysis and outcome measurement are taught and practised throughout the course. Substantial, supervised clinical placements in NHS and community settings are integrated across all three years, enabling progressive development of clinical competence and the application of theory to real patients.

• Year 1: foundation biomedical sciences, introduction to clinical skills and professional practice, communication and behaviour change.
• Year 2: core condition management (musculoskeletal, neurological, cardiorespiratory), advanced assessment and treatment techniques, and first extended clinical placements.
• Year 3: complex interventions, service evaluation and research project/dissertation, leadership and preparation for transition to professional practice with final clinical placements consolidating readiness for registration.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to demonstrate a strong science background, commitment to healthcare and relevant experience of working with people. Typical academic entry is A‑level or equivalent qualifications with adequate achievement in science or health‑related subjects; BTEC and other recognised vocational qualifications are usually accepted where they provide an appropriate academic level. Exact offer guidance should be checked with the University, and applicants from international backgrounds are considered with equivalent qualifications.

In addition to academic requirements, applicants must normally provide evidence of relevant experience (for example volunteer work, shadowing or paid roles), a satisfactory personal statement, and attend an interview or selection day. Successful applicants are required to meet professional and regulatory checks prior to placement including an enhanced DBS (or equivalent), occupational health screening and confirmation of immunisations. Some fitness to practise and fitness to undertake clinical duties checks apply. Good literacy and numeracy (equivalent to GCSE grade C/4 or higher in English and Mathematics) are usually expected.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and for membership of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP), enabling practice as a qualified physiotherapist across NHS, private and third‑sector settings. Common early career roles include rotations in acute hospitals (musculoskeletal, orthopaedics, respiratory, neurology), community rehabilitation teams, paediatric and geriatric services, and sports or occupational health clinics.

With experience, physiotherapists progress into specialist clinical roles (e.g. musculoskeletal physiotherapy, neurological rehabilitation, cardiorespiratory care), advanced practice, clinical leadership, education, research or consultancy. Graduates also commonly pursue postgraduate study (MSc, PgCert, clinical specialist courses) to develop extended scope roles or to move into academic and management pathways.
