What you'll study

This single‑honours degree delivers a solid foundation in classical and modern physics while progressively introducing specialised topics in renewable energy. In early years you study core subjects such as mechanics, electromagnetism, waves, quantum ideas, mathematical methods and experimental techniques. Practical laboratory work and computing form a continuous strand to develop data analysis and modelling skills.

In later years the programme introduces energy‑focused modules including thermodynamics and heat transfer, fluid dynamics for environmental and energy applications, electrical power and machines, photovoltaic and wind energy systems, energy storage and battery technologies, and the physics of materials for energy. You will also study energy systems, sustainability and the physics underpinning low‑carbon technologies.

The final year normally includes an individual honours research project on a physics or renewable energy topic, where you design and carry out experiments or computational investigations under academic supervision. There are also optional modules that let you pursue topics such as computational modelling, advanced materials, instrumentation and control, or energy policy and economics.

Students often have the opportunity to take an optional industrial placement year or a year abroad between the second and final years to gain practical experience in industry, research institutes or international partners.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to have A‑level or equivalent qualifications including Mathematics and usually Physics (or a closely related science).
